This is a eulogy to one of the most special little creatures in my life, our dog Adam.

Adam was born November 2, 2002, at Hasue Kennel in Michigan. We already had a whippet that we bought from them, Ellie, who was 15 months old at the time. She was a showdog reject (her ears didn't fold correctly) but I was really wanting a puppy this time. The breeder had 9 pups in "our" litter, and she chose which family got which pup. I wasn't too happy about that, as I wanted the one and only pup with light brindle spots, not dark, as Ellie had dark brindle spots and I wanted the contrast. Plus, the little light colored whippet boy that was pictured on her site was extra cute somehow. Guess who she picked for us?? The exact one I wanted!! She knew which one was perfect for us. :o)

Natasha, Reese and I (Nikolai was still in Russia) drove to Cedar Rapids to the airport to pick him up, New Year's Eve, 2002. He was the cutest little puppy I'd ever seen!!! He was an angel on the drive home... I believe that was the last time I'd ever called him an "angel", but that's okay!! He was Adam, a one of a kind. :o)

The week that we got him, I took him to JCPenney for portraits (yes, I did, and I'm glad I did!!).
He was soooo good during the photo shoot and we got some really cute pictures of him!!
Here he is with Reese, who was then only 8 years old, in the COLD Iowa winter, trying to get him to go potty!
Getting his picture was a challenge when he was a puppy because he was SO busy all of the time, but this is one of my very favorites of all (above). He was 3 1/2 months old.

As he got older, he got to be more fun, and I thought a fun photo shoot with the boys was in order! I like this picture because it looks like he's having such a great time on the fishing trip and is telling all of his stories!

This is a fairly recent one, and I like it because it shows his goofy side a little bit. He was such a happy little character!

He and Reese were such good friends, and Reese loved him like a brother, he often said. Adam could be a pain to handle at times, but Reese had an instinct with Adam and could handle him at any time. They were very close and loved each other dearly.

This one was taken the day of our house fire, when we were all stuck outside, waiting for the Red Cross truck to arrive. Adam didn't seem to notice that anything was amiss and thought it was fun that we were all outside and kept trying to get us to throw his toy for him!

Adam was the kind of dog that made you laugh. He was incredibly dumb, but he used that dumbness to keep us all entertained!! We often called him "Fat Adam" or "The Fat Dog", though he, being a whippet, was far from fat!! Next to petite and tiny Ellie he was fat, but he started responding to the name "Fat" so we kept at it. LOL He was a big GOOF and wanted nothing more than to be loved and protected. He was also a big baby, and had an extremely low pain tolerance. If he'd stub his toe or walk into a wall, he'd cry and come running at me for sympathy, which I wholeheartedly gave him!! He loved nothing more than to play fetch and would almost panic if you told him to "go get your 'where'd it go'"!! (Toys were "where'd it go"'s.) He loved to run as fast as he could and loved to show off to you how fast he was going. He'd RIP around the yard and run in front of you leaving 3mm of space between you and him as he passed at 80 mph. When he did that, you DIDN'T MOVE, cause if you did, he was liable to crash into you and both of you would end up with broken bones!! Somehow he lived his whole life without a major injury. Incredible.

Adam will be remembered for a LONG time in our family for being hilarious, dumb-as-a-brick, lovable, adorable, naughty (he never met a garbage can or kitchen counter he didn't like!!), and a big woosy baby. And we wouldn't have changed a thing about him. He was only 6 (almost 7) years old when we put him down last Saturday, from a very fast-acting illness that went undiagnosed by the vets (my best guesses are that he ate a toxic lizard or had a brain tumor or hemorrhage). Adam was a pain in the neck, but we couldn't have loved him more. He was a good friend, and a good buddy, and a good son.

He will be sorely missed for a long time.

The Creation
(Author Unknown)

When God had made the earth and sky
the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
the fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He'd finished
not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine
and give each one a name."

And so He traveled far and wide
and everywhere He went,
a little creature followed Him
until its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth
and in the sky and sea,
the little creature said, "Dear Lord,
there's not one left for me."

Kindly the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
and called you Dog, My friend."

Please, no comments about how Adam named the animals, not God. I KNOW THAT. It was just a nice poem.

Really nice Miss. It was fun to see the pics again and remember how he used to tattle on Ellie :)

Ah, you remember how he tattled on Ellie!! That was SO HILARIOUS!!!! It always paid off too: Ellie would get in trouble and Adam would get doused with sympathy and attention!! LOL!!

I forgot to mention that when he was a pup he went with me everyday to nursing homes that I covered in rural Iowa. It was great for the residents and great for him.

I loved that dog! When I stayed at your home while you were in Ukraine for 3 weeks, Adam and I would "fight" over the best spot on the bed! He'd get up but would "talk" or bark at me like he wasn't happy! He drove me crazy when he helped himself to our pizza or food on the counters but how could you not love that dog!! What an adorable dog and I will miss him in our family too!

Oh, I'm sorry. It hurts when a loved animal is no longer with us!

Awww, Missy! My heart aches for you. I DREAD "that" day for my Sadie. I loved what you wrote, though. Remembering all of the fun and personality that these dogs bring is the right way to go. It's so funny to hear the similarities Whippets and Italian Greyhounds have - my Sadie loves to run huge circles very fast and pass you by a few millimeters... So sweet!
